More Teeny Tiny Art

I have been working on more 4"x4"s, and I hope those of you who were inspired by the Giveaway post are having fun with this format as well.  Our winner, Liz Hoffman, will be getting her package this week; hope you have fun with it, Liz!  The rest of you can get 4"x4" panels at Cheap Joe's or Dick Blick or Jerry's Artarama.  When ordering panels, pay attention to the depth.  I use .75" deep panels for my 4"x4" pieces, but some are 7/8" or 1-5/8" deep, which you might prefer.  My favorite are the ones offered by Blick, but Cheap Joe's are a much better deal.  Canadians can get 4"x4" panels at Curry's, which are 1.5" deep.

Here are a few of the latest 4"x4" pieces:

These, AND MORE, are available as prints at Fine Art America, in sizes up to 24"x24", in your choice of framing style.  You can also see them at much higher resolution on Fine Art America.  The originals will be on display at our local library in Rupert for the months of January and February.

Happy New Year!!!!

And thanks to all of you for the 50th birthday wishes.  Best birthday EVER!!  Thanks for making 2013 a totally fabulous year at Jane Davies Studios.

NEW WINNER

It turns out that Kaye62 is not in the continental United States, and so I have to move to the next person on the list for a winner.  Which is.... Liz Hoffman!  It's up to you to e-mail me, Liz, with your mailing address, so I hope you're reading this.  Sorry, Kaye!

BTW, it is my 50th birthday today!

The GIVEAWAY Winner!

Kaye62, whose comment was #62 in the list, is the winner of the four 4"x4" panels and stack of paper.  What an enthusiastic response!  THank you all for your comments and indulging me with attention as I do my 4"x4"s.  One of you asked how far along I am in the goal of 400 pieces, and I am sad to report that I am only officially at 114.  I've done many more 4"x4"s, but I'm limiting the count to those that are "finished" pieces, pieces worthy of mounting and exhibiting.  Some whole groups of them don't quite make it - I start with an idea for a series, but it doesn't work in that format, or ends up at a dead end.  In my possession I have very few of the 4"x4"s, as many have been sold and a group of them are currently on exhibit at Gilded Pear Gallery.

Here, again, is a picture of the little prize package.  It does not include the mounted piece.

For those of you who would like to buy your own 4"x4" panels, the best deal on them is at Cheap Joe's.  They make 3/4" deep panels in lots of sizes, and they are very sturdy.  To clarify my process:  I work on paper (slightly larger than the panel), and then mount the paper onto the panel.  This allows me the freedom to make a lot of pieces without using up panels.  Only the keepers get mounted.

Have fun with this, all of you who are inspired to make Teeny Tiny Art!!

Season of Giving Donations

Thanks SO MUCH to all of you who made contributions to charities through my Season of Giving offer!  What an impressive response.  YOU ARE AWESOME!!  I hope you like the prints.  Together we have provided the following, through Heifer International:
We have also made a healthy donation to Hunger-Free Vermont, and provided two families with a season's worth of fresh local produce through NOFA.  Thank you for helping me make this a meaningful holiday season.

Check in tomorrow for tomorrow's drawing for the 4"x4" Giveaway.

More 4"x4"s and a GIVEAWAY

This week I began another little series of 4"x4" pieces, part of my ongoing 4"x4"x400 Project.  Predictably, I used some of the techniques I explored the the Green-Red pieces, scratching and scraping.  Here are a few of the results:

Working in series, and in this teeny tiny format is a great way to gain creative momentum.  Each piece is its own entity, but its the series, the multiplicity of them that makes the impact.

To provide a little encouragement for you to try this, I'm offering a little 4"x4" kit, including four 4"x4" cradled wood panels, and a stack of 4.25"x 4.25" papers to get started.  I cut my paper slightly larger than the panel so that I have wiggle room when mounting.

To enter the drawing to win my little 4"x4" kit, just comment on this blog post, and give me your name so I can identify you.  The drawing will be on Sunday, December 22, solstice!  You must be in the continental United States to qualify, just so that shipping is easy.

I am teaching a workshop in Teeny Tiny Art at Art Unraveled on July 30, 2014; and again at Art and Soul in Virginia Beach, on October 2, 2014.  BTW, registration for Art Unraveled is now open.

More Red and Green Pieces

Here are a few more pieces in the green-red series I started last week.  These became more neutral and more about line and texture.  In the video I demonstrate a couple of the techniques I use in these pieces:

Season of Giving

I was thinking of ways to give this holiday season, and came up with three charities I would like to support:  Heifer International, which supplies families in the poorest parts of the world with livestock and other goods that help them become self-sufficient; Hunger-Free Vermont, which works towards providing food to all families in Vermont; and Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont, which is providing ways of getting locally grown organic products to families that could not otherwise afford them

So, I am offering the following four pieces, in a seasonally appropriate color scheme, for download for $15.  ALL proceeds from the sale of these will add to my donations to the above organizations.  You will get a zip file with the four images in hi resolution, sized to be printed on 8.5"x11" paper. I recommend printing on matte photo paper for best, framable, results.

Gilded Pear Gallery

I just shipped off some work to Gilded Pear Gallery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  My friend, Mary Zeran, referred me to it, and we're hoping it will be a good fit.  Mary has a show there opening on December 6.  I send four of my Shapes pieces, several other 10"x10" pieces, two of my new 12"x12" grids, and a whole mess of my 4"x4" pieces.  I was not sure how to title the new 12"x12" grids, but I realized that they are a continuation of the edge and atmosphere explorations I did in a series last spring, called "Edge Location".  So they are part of that series now.

Here are my pieces laid out on a table, all mounted to wood panel and varnished. The 10"x10" pieces are on 1-5/8" deep panel, and the two 12"x12"s are on 3/4" deep panel.

Here are the two 12"x12" grids, "Edge Location #7" and "Edge Location #8", standing up.

This is how I put the hanging wire on panel pieces.  With the wire mounted to the inside of the panel border, the piece hangs flush to the wall.

This is available as a print.

I am in process of uploading new work to my Fine Art America gallery, so more of it is available as prints.  At Fine Art America, you can choose the size and materials of your print.

Layering and Making Textures

I am working on a series of pieces that are 12"x12", collage and paint on paper.  I'll be mounting some of them (ones I want to exhibit) on wood panel.  I don't know what these are about yet, what themes might emerge, but I am clearly working with a grid format; printed text as a background, a limited palette, and lots of layering.
Here are some of them spread out on a table.

Here is one in process.

Another one in process.  This one may be almost finished.

I thought I'd share some of my layering techniques with you.  These are just a few of what I'll be teaching in Layers and Textures in Kansas City in March, and Layers and Textures in Portland in April.

Here are two that are finished:
This is the first one I work on in the video.

In this one I use the same contact paper masking technique a in the video.
